One Woman Show!

My name is Marta! I am an artist, maker and woodworker living in Savannah, Georgia. I am living my best life in pursuit of creativity and making things for others!

I have always been a fine artist. Its part of who I always have been. I went to art school in college (Shout out to ACA!!! Atlanta College of Art, now part of SCAD) which is where I discovered Stage Lighting. If you've ever been to a concert and seen the lighting and said "WOW, Look at that!" Yeah, that's what I do, bring the WOW! I had this moment of connection thinking, ..."I'm painting to music with technology..." ding ding ding! This was when I decided that I wanted to do more of that kind of art. For 20 years now, I have been doing event, and concert production. When I came to Savannah I was introduced to theatre and fell in love!

Needless to say, I still made art every single day, too! My art usually has a good bit of drawing at its core. I draw from life and almost always in ink (here we insert praise for the Micron Pen) with what I call a semi-blind contour process. This is where my pen draws the line that my eye is following on the form as I'm looking intently at the subject. I have a way of drawing that allows me to define form and shape in a fairly minimalist form, but capture extreme details when the piece calls for it.

Drawing is not all I do, however. I paint too and thought in my first college try I'd major in Painting but discovered stage work instead at that time. I also have a love for found objects. That led me to collage and assemblage and eventually to site specific installations at a co-op gallery space here in Savannah.

As my creations grew in size, the need for a shop space became necessary, not only to collect my hoard of found objects but to build things. Thus was born a wood shop. I am infatuated with wood! It is beautiful. Each board different. Like a persons face or personality. I love the knotty wood that others put to the side not to use. I like turning these lesser pieces into something magnificent!!! Same thing in my art! The found objects, eggshells, teabags, etc. They are trash. Most never take a second look, but if you look closely you can appreciate the color, or form, or the way the shadows play off of them.

So I close by saying, I hope you find something beautiful in my shop. Something that makes you take a closer look. Something that makes you pause later and appreciate the little things in life!
